Chapter 6 - Network Technologies Flashcards
What is a network?
A network is of a number of computers linked together either by cable or by using wireless technology
What does LAN stand for?
Local Area Network
What is a LAN?
A network spread over a SMALL geographical area.
Give an example of a LAN
A school network
What does WAN stand for?
Wide Area Network
What is a WAN?
A network spread over a LARGE geographical area
Give an example of a WAN
The internet
What is a file server?
A computer on a network that is responsible for the storage and management of data files so that other computers on the same network can access the files.
What is a back-up?
A copy of a file made and stored on a different storage device in case the original file gets lost, or becomes corrupted or physically damaged.
What is a virus?
Software designed to damage a computer system
What is the internet?
An international network
What does WWW stand for?
World Wide Web
What is the World Wide Web?
The WWW is a means of accessing information over the internet. It is made up of web pages linked by hyperlinks.
What does URL stand for?
Uniform Resource Locator
What is a URL?
A URL is the address of a web page on the WWW
What does HTML Stand for?
HyperText Markup Language
What is HTML?
An authoring language used to write web pages
What is a hyperlink?
A hyperlink allows users to move from one HTML page to another
What is a communications protocol?
A SET OF RULES that allow communication between two different computer systems
What does HTTP stand for?
HyperText Transfer Protocol
What is HTTP?
A protocol used by the World Wide Web that allows web pages to be transferred on the internet
What does IoT stand for?
Internet of Things
What is an intranet?
A private network set up as a secure website, owned and managed by a organisation
What is broadband?
A telecommunications link that provides a wide bandwidth communication for a HIGH SPEED INTERNET CONNECTION
What is the IoT?
Smart devices connected to the internet
What is a sensor?
An input device used to measure a physical quantity such as temperature, pressure or loudness and convert it into a digital format for input to a computer
What does Wi-Fi stand for?
Wireless Fidelity
What is Wi-Fi?
A radio technology that allows devices to connect together
What is Bluetooth?
A radio technology that allows devices to connect together over short distances
What is optical fibre?
A communications medium that uses very thin glass strands to send data at very fast transmission speeds
What is bandwidth?
The amount of data that can be transmitted over a network in a fixed amount of time. Measured in bits per second
What does bps stand for?
bits per second
What is a repeater?
A network device used in a fibre optic communications system to boost a signal
What is 4G?
A mobile phone technology that allows high speed data access
What does NIC stand for?
Network Interface Card
What is a NIC?
A Network Interface Card is an electronic board fitted to a computer so it can be connected to a network
What does WNIC stand for?
Wireless Network Interface Card
What is a WNIC used for?
A WNIC is usually used to WIRELESSLY connect portable devices (like laptops) to a network
What is ethernet?
A network cable that allows access to a network when plugged into a NIC.
Provides a more stable connection that Wi-Fi
What is a switch?
A switch is a hardware device that allows a computer to connect to it using a cable to access a network.
What is a router?
A hardware device which connects a number of networks together either by cable or wireless, to allow data transmission
What is a topology?
The shape of a network. E.g. a bus or ring
What is a Bus network
A network topology where all computers are placed along a backbone and data can travel both ways.
There are terminators at each end to stop the data from bouncing back.
If the backbone breaks the entire network will fail.
What is a Star network?
A network topology in which all computers are connected to the main computer by their own cable.
What is a backbone?
The main cable on a bus network
What is a Ring network?
A network topology in which there is no central controlling computer each computer is directly connected to its neighbouring computers to form a ring.
