Chapter 6, Muscular System Flashcards
5 components of physical health
- Muscular strength
- Muscular endurance
- Cardiorespiratory endurance
- Flexibility
- Body composition
(strength) the amount of force that a muscle can apply in a given contraction
Muscular Strength
(endurance) the ability of muscles to keep working over a period of time
Muscular Endurance
the ability of your heart, blood vessels, lungs, and blood to deliver oxygen/nutrients to your body’s cells
Cardiorespiratory Endurance
the ability of the joints to move through their full range of motion
Flexibility
the ratio of muscle/bone to body-fat tissue
Body Composition
FITT
a formula made up of four important parts involved in fitness training
- F - Frequency
- I - Intensity
- T - Time
- T - Type
the number of times the heart beats per minute while at rest
Resting Heart Rate (RHR)
RICE
treatment of minor sports injuries
R - Rest - time to heal, varies for different injuries
I - Ice - 20 mins without heat
C - Compression - reduces swelling
E - Elevation - raise injury above heart
4 stages of sleep
NREM- non rapid eye movement (3 stages)
Stage 1: eyes closed, easy to wake (5-10 mins in this stage)
Stage 2: light sleep, HR lowers, temperature drops (10-25 mins in this stage)
Stage 3: deep sleep, harder to wake, disoriented if woken, tissue repair/regrowth, build bone and muscle, strengthen immune system
REM - rapid eye movement: dream state, 90 mins after you fall asleep, gets longer through the night (up to 1 hr)
3 types of muscle
skeletal - voluntary movement - attaches to the bones of the skeletal system, connected to the bones by tendons, moves the body
smooth - involuntary - moves eyelids, internal organs, and blood vessels
cardiac - involuntary - found only in the walls of the heart
a long hold type of stretch, should be performed after exercise
Static Stretch
helps prepare muscles for the action they are about to perform, should be performed before exercise
Dynamic Stretch
What are muscle fibers made of?
proteins (muscles are made up of these muscle fibers)
lack of sleep
Sleep deprivation
