Orbicularis oculi
Located around eye; closes eyelids
Frontalis
Located on front of skull; raises eyebrows and wrinkles forehead
Orbicularis oris
Located around the lips; known as the kissing muscle because it is used to pucker the lips
Temporalis
Located on temporal bones of the skull; serves in elevation and retraction of mandible
Zygomaticus
Located near zygomatic bone; draws angle of mouth upward and laterally
Masseter
Located near zygomatic arch and maxilla; serves in elevation (as in closing of the mouth) and protraction of mandible
Buccinator
Located between maxilla and mandible; compresses the cheeks against the teeth and is used in acts such as blowing
Sternocleidomastoid
Located near manubrium sterni and medial portion of the clavicle; rotates the head to the opposite side or obliquely rotate the head
Pectoralis major
Located near breasts; addicts and medially rotates the humerus. Also draws the scapula anteriorly and inferiorly.
Rectus abdominus
Creates abs; serves as flexion of the lumbar spine
External oblique
Located on side of abdomen; serves for contralateral rotation of the torso
Internal oblique
Located on side of abdomen; compresses abdomen
Biceps brachii
Located on upper arm; flexes elbow, flexes and abducts shoulder
Deltoid
Located near shoulders; serves in shoulder abduction, flexion and extension
Iliopsoas
Located near thigh; serves in flexion of the hip
Quadriceps
Located in upper part of leg; serves in knee extension and hip flexion
Tibialis anterior
Located in lower part of leg; serves in dorsiflexion and inversion of the foot
Trapezius
Located near neck in back; serves in rotation, retraction, elevation, and depression of scapula
Latissimus Dorsi
Located near the side in the middle of the back(vertically); serves in adducts, extends and internally rotates the arm when the insertion is moved towards the origin
Triceps Brachii
Located in upper part of arm; extends forearm, long head extends, adducts arm, extends shoulder
Gluteus Maximus
Located near buttocks; serves in external rotation and extension of the hip joint, supports the extended knee, chief antigravity muscle in sitting and abduction of the hip
Gluteus Medius
Located anteriorly of buttocks; serves in abduction of the hip, preventing adduction of the hip. Also serves in medial rotation of the thigh.
Hamstrings
Located on the posterior part of upper leg; serves in the flexion of the knee and extension of the hip
Gastrocnemius
Located near the bulging shape of the calf; plantar flexes foot, flexes knee
Soleus
Located in the back part of the lower leg; plantarflexion
