Chapter 6 - Electrical Flashcards
The left PFD, ND, and FMC are normally powered by?
The APU Standby Bus
Under normal operation, what powers the MAIN and APU Standby buses?
• Main Standby is powered by AC 3
• APU Standby is powered by the Captain’s Transfer Bus, which is normally powered by AC 3
What is the source of power to the APU Standby bus with a loss of AC bus 3?
The Captain’s Transfer bus, which is now powered by AC 1
What causes DISC to illuminate in the IDG Disconnect Switch?
• High Oil Temperature
• Low Oil Pressure
• Uncorrectable frequency fault
Do the AC BTBs and DCIRs open at any time when there is no cockpit annunciation?
Yes, during a triple autopilot coupled approach
What will power the Main Deck Cargo Handling bus with both APU generator 2 and External Power 2 available?
External Power 2 has priority over the APU generator
You are being released to a destination where a Category III approach is to be conducted. Enroute, the number 4 Generator has been disconnected. Can you still conduct a category III approach?
Yes
How can you manually open the number 4 DCIR?
Open the number 4 bus tie switch
You are conducting your cockpit setup. Inspecting the overhead maintenance panel, you notice that the number 1 generator field OPEN light is illuminated. There are no discrepancies in the logbook. How can you reset the generator field?
Cycle the number 1 generator control switch off, then on
The aircraft is dark. External power is available to the left side of the Synch Bus. Can you light your path to the cockpit? How?
• Yes.
• First, connect the Ground Service Bus to the Ground Handling Bus with the switch adjacent to the L1 door.
• Second, select the Flight Deck Access Light switch next to the Ground Service switch to ON.
What are the main AC electrical power sources?
4 IDGs
2 APU generators
2 External power sources
What is the power output capability of the IDGs?
115 Volt AC, 3 Phase, 400 Hz, at 90 KVA
Describe the function of the Split System Breaker (SSB).
Divides the synchronous bus, allowing each side of the AC electrical system to be powered by separate auxiliary or external power sources.
What does a Bus Isolation (ISLN) light illuminated indicate?
- BTB open
- AC bus isolated from synchronous bus
- Opens related DC isolation relay (DCIR) isolating the respective DC Bus from the DC Tie Bus
- resets fault logic circuitry
What happens when you push a Generator Drive Disconnect (DRIVE DISC) switch?
Disconnects IDG from engine
Opens related Generator Control Breaker (GCB)
What is the function of the Standby Power Switch in the AUTO Position?
Allows the main and APU standby busses to be powered from available sources.
What does a Generator DRIVE light indicate?
Low oil pressure
High oil temperature
Uncorrectable generator frequency fault
What does the OFF position of the Standby Power Switch do?
- Standby power not available
- Main and APU standby buses disconnected from all power sources
What does the ON position of the Battery Switch provide?
- Main battery available as backup power source for main battery bus and main standby bus
- APU battery available as backup power source for APU battery bus and APU standby bus
What are some of the equipment items powered by the Utility buses?
Forward main fuel pumps 2 and 3
Forward override/jettison fuel pumps 2 and 3
Center override/jettison fuel pump
Galley equipment (Freighter)
Describe the electrical load shedding process.
Utility bus loads are shed one at a time through ELCUs in a programmed sequence until the overload condition is relieved.
What is an ELCU?
Electrical Load Control Unit that protects the electrical system from utility bus faults and provides load management through automatic load shedding.
What Utility Busses does the the left and right Utility Power Switch control?
- L controls 1 +2
- R controls 3 +4
What does the “AVAIL” light indicate on the External and APU PWR switches?
The related power source (APU or EXT) is plugged in and available, the power quality is acceptable.
