Chapter 6: Cells Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the basic building blocks of life.
What are the parts of an animal cell?
1.Small, numerous vacuoles
2. Nucleus
3.Cytoplasm
4. Cell membrane
What are the parts of a plant cell?
- Large central vacuole
- Cell membrane
- Cell wall
- Chloroplasts ( Some)
- Nucleus
- Cytoplasm
What is the function of a vacuole?
It stores liquids, food and waste materials.
What is cytoplasm?
It is a jelly-like substance that fills a cell.
What is the function of cytoplasm?
It is a site where most chemical reactions take place.
What is the function of the nucleus?
It controls all cellular activities and contains DNA/ genetic material.
What is DNA?
It is the genetic material in living things passed down from parents to offspring.
What would happen if the nucleus is removed from the cell?
It would cause the cell to die.
What is the cell membrane?
It is the thin outer layer that surrounds a cell.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
It controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell.
What is a cell wall?
It is the tough outer covering surrounding the cell membrane in a plant cell.
What is the function of a cell wall?
It protects and supports the entire cell and is rigid and gives the cell a regular shape. It also allows substances to move into and out of the cell.
What is the function of a plant cell?
It allows photosynthesis to take place
What are the differences in an animal and plant cell model?
- A plant cell has a cell wall but an animal cell does not have it.
- A plant cell may have chloroplasts but an animal does not have chloroplasts.
- A plant cell has one or two large vacuoles in the middle of the cell but an animal cell has numerous small vacuoles.
- A plant cell can be larger than an animal cell.
