Chapter 6 Flashcards
How to use your gears to echo driving
Shift to a hoigher gear as soon as you can and drive at as high gear as possible. (5th gear from 50-60 km)
When accelerating , shift to higher gear when the enginge reaches 2500 revolutions per minutes.
When doing an engine break, shift to a lower gear when the engine drops to 1300 rpm.
What fuels are fossil fuels?
The combustion emits carbon dioxid.
Petrol
Diesel
Natural gas
What are biofuels?
They do not contribute to the greenhouse effect.
- ethanol
- biogas
- biodiesel
What portion of the carbon dioxid emissions in Sweden is caused by road traffic?
1/3
What are nitric oxides?
tropospheric ozone layer. Contribute to the acidification of nature and eutrophication of seas and lakes. Irritate our mucus membranes and affect our airways.
What is the tropospheric ozone?
Forms where sunlight meets greenhouse gases. It is greatest in the summer months.
Soot and particles?
repiratory problems and risk of cancer
Biggest problem in build-up areas.
Formed by engine combustion and in connection with wear from studded tires.
Noise and infrasound
Infra-sound cannot be detected but can contribute along with noise to disturbance in sleep, insomnia, concentration difficulties, headaches and tiredness
What does the catalytic converter do?
converts 80-95% of the harmful substances to carbon dioxide.
It only works when it has reached it’s working temperature. cold starts and short journeys the exhuast fues won’t be purified
How long before driving should the engine block heaters be used?
-15C: 90 min
0C: 60 min
10C: 30 min
What is HA oils?
Tires contain substances which are harmful for the environnement that are released when then wear out. HA oils (high aromatic oils) for ex.
Should choose tires that do not contain toxic oils such as marked with the Nordic Eco-label
What is the positive side of choosing tires with lowest rolling resistance?
Diminish fuel consumption by 3-5%
Can air pressure affect the fuel consumption?
yes. too low pressure increases the fuel consumption
How much does the air conditioning increase fuel consumption?
5-10%
Does 4 wheel drive increase fuel consumption?
yes, 5%
