Describe Medicare
Provides universal health insurance scheme available to all Aus residents, regardless of income, location and culture.
It aims to ensure all Aus are able to access basic healthcare that is subsidised by the Gov.

Provides extra financial assistance for those that incur significant out of pocket expenses for medicare services

Most tax payers in Aus pays an additional 2% of their taxable income towards the costs of Medicare.
Describe the Medicare Levy surcharge
High income earners without private health insurance pay an additional 1-1.5% on top of the medicare levy.
How does medicare promote sustainability in relation to Healthcare?
Not every health service and treatment is subsidised under medicare, as they only cover those treatments deemed to be medically necessary. This helps keep the costs of the scheme under control and sustainable for the future.
How does Medicare promote access in relation to healthcare?
ensures all Aus citizens regardless of sociocultural or environmental factors are able to access essential healthcare at an affordable price removing the key barrier of income.

Allows medicare card holders access to over 4000 common prescription medicines at a significantly reduced rate.
How does PBS promote sustainability in relation to healthcare?
Not every medication is listed on the PBS, only those that are seen to have a benefit to a wide range of the community are subsidised as it is not financially sustainable to have every medication subsidised.
