Chapter 6 Flashcards
Reactant
A substance that participates in a chemical reaction
Product
The result of a chemical reaction.
Chemical Energy
The energy released when a chemical compound reacts to produce new compounds.
Exothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction in which heat is released its surrounding. An example is a burning candle.
Endothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction that needs heat to occur.
Synthesis Reaction
A reaction with 2 or more substances combined to form a new compond
Decomposition Reaction
One substance is broken down into two or more substances
Electrolysis
Now process which uses electrical currents to produce a chemical reaction. At least one product of such reactions always contains oxygen.
Combustion Reaction
Oxygen is a reactant in every combustion reaction. At least one product of such reactions always contains oxygen.
Single-displacement Reaction
A reaction where one element takes another elements place in a compound.
Double-displacement Reaction
A reaction where a gas, solid precipitate , or a molecular compound forms from the apparent exchange of atoms or ions between two compounds.
Oxidation-reduction Reaction
A chemical change in which 1 species loses electrons and another gains electrons
Radical
A group that has 1 or more electrons available for bonding.
Chemical Equation
A formula to represent chemical reaction that shows the relationship between reactants and products
Mole ratio
The relative number of moles required to produce a certain amount of product in a chemical reaction.
