Chapter 10 Flashcards
Motion
An object’s change in position relative to a reference point
Displacement
The change in position of an object.
Speed
The distance traveled by the time interval during which the motion occurred.
Velocity
The speed of an object in a particular direction
Acceleration
The rate that velocity changes over time
Reference Point
An object in relation to another object that stays in place.
Average Speed
The distance traveled by an object divided by the time the object takes to travel that distance.
Instantaneous Speed
Speed measured in a small time interval
Resultant Velocity
The direction of two velocities.
Centripetal acceleration
Acceleration that occurs in uniform circular motion.
Constant Acceleration
The velocity changes by the same amount over each time interval on a velocity-time graph.
Force
An action exerted on a body in order to change the body’s state of rest or motion.
Net Force
The combination of all of the forces acting on an object
Balanced Forces
The forces applied to an object that produce a net force of zero
Unbalanced Forces
When two opposite forces acting on the same object are unequal, the forces are unbalanced.
Friction
A force that opposes motion between two surfaces that are in contact
Sliding Friction
Friction that occurs when objects slide past each other
Rolling Friction
Friction that occurs when a round object rolls over a flat surface.
Fluid Friction
Any object moving through a fluid such as air encounters friction between air and the surface of the moving object.
Static Friction
The force that resists the initiation of sliding motion between two surfaces that are in contact and at rest
Kinetic Friction
The force that opposes the movement of two surfaces that are in contact and are sliding over each other
