Chapter 6 Flashcards
3 parts of a nerve cell
1) body; 2) dendrites; 3) axon
4 parts of the brain
1) Cerebrum; 2) Cerebellum; 3) Diencephalon; 4) Brain Stem
Nervous system, by function
1) Somatic (monitor and direct skeletal muscles; 2) autonomic nervous system - monitors and controls organs and glands - sympathetic “fight or flight” and parasympathetic “rest and digest”
Neurotransmitters
chemical messengers that travel between axon and dendrite, such as seratonin
limbic system
allows us to understand the emotions of others and to express our own emotions, have the feeling of wanting something and the motivation to go get it
hypothalamus
regulates heart rate, respiration, hormone secretion, blood pressure, body temperature, sleep cycles, coordination between nervous and endocrine systems
Enteric nervous system
Our second brain, the private nervous system of the digestive organs with as many neurons as the spinal cord and the same neurotransmitters as the brain.
