Chapter 2 Flashcards
3 main types of muscle
skeletal, cardiac, smooth
muscle contraction sequence
1) message sent as action potential along a nerve to the muscle; 2) chemical messengers leave the nerve and communicate with the membrane of the muscle cell; 3) chemicals stimulate contraction of myofilaments within the muscle cell (sliding filament theory)
What are bone cells called?
osteocytes
3 physiological functions of bones
1) body support; 2) mineral balance; 3) blood cell formation
What is the difference between tendons and ligaments?
Tendons connect muscles to bones, whereas ligaments connect bones to bones.
What are bursa?
Fluid filled sacs that protect tendons and ligaments from possible impact of the moving bone within the joint.
What four components make up physical structure?
Bones, ligaments, tendons and muscles.
What are the two main components of bones?
Calcium phosphate and collagen fibers.
