Inattentional blindness
We fail to notice unexpected objects in our surroundings
Selective attention
The ability to focus awareness on specific features in the environment while ignoring others
Circadian rhythm
The variations in physiological processes that cycle within a 24 hour period, including the sleep wake cycle
REM sleep & characteristics
Quick movements of the eye during sleep, thought to mark phases of dreaming.
> N1, N2, N3 sleep
> REM last 8-10 minutes then starts over
> N1 = REM
Sleep deprivation
Sleep supports processes in central nervous system: neural growth, metabolic cleanup in brain, memory consolidation, protection against cellular damage.
Sleep depreciation inhibits growth of new neurons, which causes memory loss
Latent content of dreams
Pertains to the unconscious wants, fears and desires
Sleep disorders
Narcolepsy: neurological disorder that affects the brains ability to control sleep-wake cycle
Sleep apnea: a disorder that causes you to stop breathing while sleeping
Hypersomnia: the inability to stay awake a alert during the day despite having a full night of sleep
Post hypnotic suggestions
After a hypnosis session particular behavior will occur sometime in the future
Withdrawal
The adverse effects people experience with physical dependence experience after they stop using a drug
Tolerance
The need to consume increasing amounts of a drug to get the desired effect
Psychological v. Physical dependence
Addiction results from habitual use or physical and psychological dependence on a substance . People who are addicted continue to use a substance despite knowing it is harmful and often attempts to quit.
Depressants
Alcohol, sedatives, opioids. Relaxation, depressed brain activity, slowed behavior, reduced inhibitions.
Risks: accidents, brain damage, liver damage, blackouts, birth defects
Binge drinking
Drinking large amounts of alcohol in a short amount of time of time
Stimulants
Caffeine, cocaine, nicotine, amphetamines, MDMA.
Increased heart rate, euphoria, increased alertness, high body temp, dehydration, hallucinations.
Risks: insomnia, paranoia, heart attack, depression
Caffeine and nicotine withdrawal
Caffeine: headache, fatigue, decreased energy, depressed mood, difficulty concentrating.
Nicotine: headaches, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia.
