Chapter 6 Flashcards
a stable personality characteristic that reflects the tendency to strive for success
Achievement motive
how was the achievement motive measured?
by people’s responses to the TAT (Thematic Apperception Test)
What were the problems with the TAT cards which were presented to men and women in the 50s and 60s when it came to measuring achievement motivation?
- The domains studied (TAT cards) were more relevant to men than women
- the characteristics that defined the motive conflicted with the characteristics of the female gender role
What is one area of research that has addressed how women reconcile a need for achievement with a need to adhere to a female gender role:
Fear of achievement/success
the association of negative consequences with achievement
the fear of success Horner 1972
Effect of feedback on evaluation
shows that women are more affected by feedback in general whether it be positive or negative
men more than likely are not effected and stay about the same regardless the feed back they get
The effect of feedback can be influenced by
women have lower self-esteem than men
this suggest that the salience of these kinds of stereotypes may have a negative impact on the women’s performance
stereotype threat
this is when a performance is assumed to reflect ability that is unchangeable
fixed mindset
performance is assumed to reflect effort that is modifiable
growth mindset
those with this kind of mindset are more likely to challenging tasks and to lose confidence when a task becomes difficult
fixed minset
this mind set earn higher grades and recover more quickly when they have received a poor grade
this can also protect against stereotypical threat
growth mindset
men maintain an interdependent sense of self that is separate from others ( emphasizing personal attributes and skills)
independent self-construal
maintain an interdependent sense of self in which others are integrated into the self
interdependent self-construal
There are 2 kinds of interdependence:
relational interdependence and collectional interdependence
