Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is telecommunication?
It is the electronic transmission of signals for effective communication by means of a telephone, radio and television.
How does telecommunication impact businesses?
Greatly, as it lessens the barrier of time and distance.
What is the general model of telecommunications?
A sending unit sends a message signal to a telecommunications device.
The device may process the signal and convert it into a different form.
The device sends the signal through a medium.
Another device connected to the receiving unit receives the signal.
The receiving unit can send another message back to the sending unit.
What is synchronous communication?
When the receiver gets the message instantly when it is sent.
What are some examples of synchronous communication?
A phone call
Instant Messaging (MSN)
What is asynchronous communication?
When there is a measurable delay between the sending and receiving of a message.
What are some examples of asynchronous communication?
Email and Post office
What are the telecommunication media types?
Guided transmission & Wireless transmission.
What are some examples of guided transmission(wires)?
Twisted-pair wire
Coaxial cable
Fiber-optic cable
Broadband over power lines.
What are some examples of Wireless Transmissions?
Microwave
3G, 4G & 5G Wireless communication
WIFI
Bluetooth
Infrared
What is a computer network?
Devices and software needed to connect two or more computer systems or devices.
What are network nodes?
Computers and devices on the networks.
What are some network types?
Personal Area Network
Local Area Network
Metropolitan Area Network
Wide Area Network
What is centralized processing?
Processing that occurs in a single location. This offers the highest degree of control.
What is decentralized processing?
Processing that occurs in various locations. This minimizes catastrophic events at one location.
What is a client-server architecture?
A computer network where remote computers receive service from a host computer.
What is a client?
Any computer that sends messages from the servers on the network.
What is a Network Operating System?
A type of operating system that manages computer networks resources such as data, and applications and ensures security.
What is the internet?
It is the world’s largest computer network.
How the Internet works?
The internet sends data between computers. If they’re directly connected, messages go directly to the recipient. Otherwise, messages go through other computers until they reach the recipient. This can involve many computers or nodes. If some nodes are down, messages can still be sent using alternate routes.
What are some common Internet Application?
World Wide Web.
Web browser
HTML
E-mail
Telnet
FTP
Intranets & Extranets
