Chapter 6 Flashcards
What is Communication media?
Transfer of data occurs through this ex. fiber optic cable, wireless, usb.
Analog & Digital
Analog: Continuously varying frequency, smooth but inaccurate
Digital: Series of bits, Accurate but choppy
What is Protocol?
Procedures used to transfer info between machines
EXAMPLES:
TCP/IP - Internet protocol ex. 142.58.102.68
HTTP - Hyper Text Transfer - send web pages across web
FTP - Send files across network
BitTorrent - Transfer files using P2P file sharing
POP - Helps receive emails, assumes 1 client
IMAP - receive emails, assumes many clients
Client/server architecture
A computing model where server hosts, delivers and manages most of resources
LAN, WAN, Internet
LAN - 2+ pc’s in small area
WAN - Connects pc’s in different areas
Internet - Network of networks, connects LAN’s and WAN’s
Intra/extranet
Intra - Controlled, self-contained grouping of info resources that can be accessed within a single company using web browsers
Extra - Designed to facilitate communications between 2+ business partners
DNS
Domain Name System - Database used to translate between domain names and IP.
IETF (TCP/IP) Network levels
- Network access - describes equipment used for comm and protocols used to comm
- Internet - Works with IP and controls packet organization/timing constraints
- Transport - Opening connections & maintaining them + ensures correct packets are received
- Application - Data passed between programs and transport layer
Package switching
Each msg is split into small packs by PAD (Packet assembler/disassembler)
- Who’s your daddy protocol (packet goes around looking for matching node - reassemble a packet and req a URL)
What is a Network?
Collection of computers that communicate with one another over transmission lines
