morphemes
a minimal unit of meaning or grammatical function
free morphemes
morphemes that can stand by themselves
bound morphemes
morphemes that cannot stand alone (all affixes are bound morphemes)
stems
basic word used with bound morphemes
bound stems
morphemes that have a bound morpheme at the beginning but are not separate words (re-ceive)
lexical morphemes
free morphemes; ordinary nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs that carry the content of the messages we convey, can be added new to a language, open class of words
functional morphemes
free morphemes; articles, conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns, usually not newly added to a language, so closed class of words
derivational morphemes
bound forms that make new words or make words of a different grammatical category from the stem
inflectional morphemes
don’t produce new words in language, indicate the grammatical function of a word (ONLY plural-singular, tense, comparative & possessive form)
morph
string that cannot be broken down into smaller constituents that have a lexicogrammatical function
allomorph
morph that has a unique set of grammatical or lexical features
reduplication
repeating all or part of a form
