Chapter 51/52 Flashcards
Hormones
carried by circulatory or lymphatic sytem to tissues and other glands
Hormone receptors are found
on cell membrane
steroid receptors are found
in cytoplasm
Drugs for growth hormone deficiency (dwarfism)
protropin, somtropin, humatrope
drugs for growth hormone suppressants
parlodel, octreotide
ACTH
stimulates produciton and secretion of mineralocorticoids and glucocorticoids from the adrenal glands
Posterior pituitary gland
stores and releases ADH and oxytocin which are produced by neurons in the hypothalamus
Calcitonin
increass osteoblast activity and inhibits absorption of calcium by renal tubules and in small intestine
hypothyroidism
medications increase blood sugar levels
hyperthyroidism
-treatment: surgery, radioactive iodine, thiomide drugs–> decrease TH synthesis
glucocorticoids
protein and carb metabolism
-reduce inflammation and immune response
mineralcorticoids
regulate serum sodium and potassium levels
-promote retention of sodium and water, excretion of potassium and hydrogen
insulin
excess glucose stored as glycogen
converts glucose to fat
Diabetes mellitus
- insulin deficiency/resistance
- symptoms: thirst, hunger, urination
Childhood diabetes
-virus destroys beta cells that make insulin
