Chapter 5 Vocab Flashcards
Compound Machine
Two or more simple machines that operate together
Efficiency
Measure of how much of the work put into a machine is changed into useful output work by the machine
E=Wout/Win *100
Fulcrum
A fixed point on which a lever rotates
Inclined Plane
A sloping surface, such as a ramp, that reduces the amount of force required to do work
Input Force
The force that is applied to the machine
Lever
A bar that is free to pivot or turn around a fixed point
Mechanical Advantage
IMA=Rw/Ra IMA=l/h
Output Force
The force applied by the machine
Power
Measured in Watts; P=W/t
Pulley
A grooved wheel with a rope, chain, or cable running along the groove
Screw
An inclined plane wrapped in a spiral around a cylindrical post
Simple Machine
A machine that does work with only one movement of the machine
Watt
What is the unit of power? Naturally ;) (Electrical) Power is measured in Watts
Wedge
An inclined plane with one or two sloping sides, changes the direction of the input force
Work
The same as energy! Measured in joules W=f*D
