Chapter 2 Vocab Flashcards
Acceleration
the rate of change of velocity
Average Speed
the total distance traveled divided by the total time of travel
Constant Speed
When an object is moving neither slowing down nor speeding up
Deceleration
A negative acceleration, slowing down
Displacement
The distance and direction of an object’s change in position from the starting point
Distance
Describes how far an object has moved
Frame of reference
The object that is the background that is referred to when trying to determine the location of another object
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist any change in its motion
Speed
The distance an object travels per unit of time
Velocity
Includes the speed of an object and the direction of its motion
Motion
When an object has moved/changed locations
Instantaneous Speed
The speed at a give point in time
Newton’s 1st Law of motion
An object in motion tends to stay in motion, while an object at rest tends to stay at rest
Balanced Forces
Forces on an object that are equal in size and opposite in direction
