Chapter 1 Vocab Flashcards
Graph
A graph is a visual display of information or data.
Line Graph
Show any relationship where the dependent variable changes due to an independent variable
Bar Graph
Compares information collected by counting
Circle Graph
Used to show how some fixed quantity is broken down into parts
Control
the standard by which the test results can be compared
Constant
a factor that does not change when other variables change
Data
individual facts, statistics, or items of information
Dependent variable
factor that changes as a result of changes in the other variables
Measurement Standard
An exact standard that people agree to use to compare measurements
Scientific Method
An organized set of investigation procedures, 1)State the problem 2)Gather information 3)Form a hypothesis 4)Test the hypothesis 5)Analyze data 6)Draw conclusions
From there, if the hypothesis is not supported, go back to step 3 and modify the hypothesis. If the hypothesis is supported, go back to step 4, and repeat several times.
Scientific Law
A statement about what happens in nature and that seems to be true all the time
Scientific Theory
An explanation of things or events based on knowledge gained from many observations and investigations
Experiment
Tests the effect of one thing on another using controlled conditions
Hypothesis
A possible explanation for a problem using what you know and what you observe
Independent variable
the variable you change to see how it will affect the dependent variable
