Chapter 17 Vocab Flashcards
Atomic Number
The number of protons and # of electrons
Mass Number
The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons
Group/Family
Up and down!
Periods
Left to right!
Lewis Dot Diagram
Uses the symbol of the element and dots to represent the electrons in the outer energy level
Energy Level (2n^2)
Only applies to first 3 energy levels (2, 8,16)
Metal
Good conductor of heat and electricity, solid at room temp., reflect light, malleable, ductile
Nonmetal
Usually gas or brittle solid at room temp., not malleable, not ductile, do not conduct heat or electricity well, not shiny
Noble Gases
Exist as isolated atoms, stable, right side of periodic table
Metalloid
Can form ionic and covalent bonds with other elements, have metallic and nonmetallic properties
Nucleus
The center of an atom
Quark
Any of a number of subatomic particles carrying a fractional electric charge, postulated as building blocks of the hadrons.
Tevatron
a United States circular particle accelerator at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois
