Chapter 5 Tissues Pt1 Flashcards
Name the four major types of tissues.
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
Characteristics of Epithelial Tissues (9)
- covers organs and the body
- lines body cavities and hollow organs
- has a free surface
- has a basement membrane
- avascular ( no blood flow; heals poorly)
- cells readily divide and tightly packed
- cells often have desmosomes
- function in protection, secretion, absorption, excretion
- classified according to cell shape and # of cell layers
Types of Epithelial Tissues (9)
- Simple Squamous ET
- Simple Cuboidal ET
- Simple Columnar ET
- Pseudostratified Columnar ET
- Stratified Squamous ET
- Stratified Cubodial ET
- Stratified Columnar ET
- Transitional ET
- Glandular Epithelium
Simple Squamous ET
- single layer of flat cells
- substances pass easily through
- line air sacs, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels
Simple Cuboidal ET
- single layer of cube-shaped cells
- line kidney tubules and ovaries and ducts of some gland
Simple Columnar ET
- single layer of elongated cells
- cilia aid in moving eggs through uterine tubes
- line uterus, stomach and intestines
Pseudostratified Columnar ET
- single layer elongated cells
- appear striated
- often have cilia
- often have goblet cells
- line respiratory passage ways
Stratified Squamous ET
- many cells layers
- top cells are flat
- can accumulate keratin (protein)
- outer layer of skin
- line oral cavity, throat, vagina, and anal canal
Stratified Cuboidal ET
- 2-3 layers
- cube-shaped cells
- line ducts of mammary glands, sweat glands, salivary glands, and the pancreas
Stratified Columnar ET
- top layer of elongated cells
- cube-shaped cells in deeper layers
- line vas deferens, male urethra, and part of the pharynx
Transitional ET
- many cell layers
- specialized to change in response to increased tension
- line urinary bladder, ureters and part of urethra
Glandular Epithelium
-made of cells that are specialized to produce and secrete substances
Endocrine Gland
- are ductless
- secretes products into tissue fluid or blood
Exocrine gland
- have ducts
- secretes products into ducts that open onto a surface
Types of Glandular Secretions
- merocrine glands
- Apocrine glands
- Holocrine glands
Merocrine Gland
- fluid product
- salivary gland
- pancreas
- sweat glands
Apocrine Gland
- cellular product
- portions of cells
- mammary glands
- ceruminous glands
Holocrine Gland
- secretory gland
- whole cells
- sebaceous glands
Simple means…
Single layer of cells
Squamous means…
Thin,flattened cells
