chapter 5 the working cell Flashcards
selectively premeable plasma membrane
allows some stuff to pass through
2 types of transport
passive and active
passive
cell uses no energy as it moves down concentration gradient
3 types of passive transport
diffusion, osmosis, and facilitated diffusion
diffusion
movement of high to low concentration
what affects diffusion ?
steep concentration, temp, molecular size, presence of electric and pressure gradient
Osmosis
same thing but with water where you have hyper ,hypotonic, or isotonic conditions
hypertonic
where 1 out of 2 has a high concentration solute
hypotonic
1 out of 2 has a low concentration solute
isotonic
2 have equal concentration
how do plants encourage osmosis
the vacuoles becomes hypertonic that encourages water to come in
active
cell uses energy to move gradient
protein mediated transport ( facilitated diffusion)
moves down concentration gradient via protein
exocytosis and endocytosis
transport material in bulks
endocytosis 3 types
Phagocytosis, pinocytosis, receptor mediated endocytosis
phagocytosis
soil matter in bulk (eating )
pinocytosis
Liquid matter in bulk ( drinking )
exocytosis
substances released by cell
signal transduction pathway
series of molecular reactions where a signal on cells surface tiggers specific responses within cell
energy
capacity to do work
2 types of energy
kinetic and potenial
cellular respiration
energy releasing breakdown of food molecules
