Q

How much of the population consisted of patriots?

A

About 40%, Usually in New England or Virginia. They often served in the local militia. Washington was very low on troops, was poorly paid, and had practically no supplies, (etc.) so honestly, it’s a huge ass surprise he could even keep his army together. African-Americans also fought alongside the revolution.
