A

The slowest of the four patterns; occurs during stages 3+4

19
Q

Insomnia

A

The inability to sleep
(Most common=diff falling asleep)
Increases during times of anxiety/stress

20

Most common in children- most children outgrow it - caused by an immature nervous system

24
Q

Biofeedback

A

A system that provides, or “feeds back” information about something happening in the body

25
Meditation
Narrowing Consciousness - attempt to get rid of stresses of the day - practiced by the Egyptians by staring at an oil-burning lamp
26
Hypnosis
- Began with German physician Frank Mesmer in the late 1700s - Used to reduce anxiety, manage pain, or overcome fears - People can only be hypnotized if they want
27
List the 4 altered states of consciousness
1) Meditation 2) Hypnosis 3) Influence of drugs 4) Biofeedback
28
Explain biofeedback
Feeding back information People have learned to control certain bodily functions - heart rate, tension headaches, blood pressure- to prevent these problems from becoming a major health problem
29
Explain how sleep apnea is controlled
A nasal mask that provides a steady air flow that can be used to prevent breathing interruptions
30
Explain the purpose of sleep
1) To revive the tired body 2) To recover from stress 3) Sleep deprivation= irritability, lack of focus, and speech difficulties 4) REM sleep is good for the brain
31
Explain the view of nightmares during the Middle Ages
Nightmares were thought to be the work of demons sent to make people pay for their sins
