Chapter 5: Stereochemistry Flashcards
What is true about enantiomers regarding polarized light?
They rotate it the same amount, but in opposite directions
What is important about molecule position when determining R/S configuration?
The lowest priority group faces backwards (usually H)
How can configuration be determined if the lowest priority is not facing away?
The direction can be inverted
What are diastereomers?
Two molecules with the same connectivity that have different stereochemistry and are not enantiomers
How many diastereomers exist for a certain molecule?
2^n where n is the amount of stereocenters
What is a (E) isomer?
The two highest priority groups are on the opposite side of the double bond
What is a (Z) isomer?
The two highest priority groups are on the same side of the double bond
How is the order of R/S determined with naming?
IUPAC ordering of carbons, or alphabetical order
