Q
What are the bone cell types?
A
- osteogenic : stem cells in the periosteum
- osteoblasts : makes the bone matrix (hard bone) on bone surfaces
- osteocytes : not mitotic, trapped in the lacunae, do daily maintenance of the bone
- osteoclasts : breaks up the bone matrix
1
Q
What is the function of the skeletal system?
A
Protection, movement, mineral storage, blood cell production, fat storage
2
Q
What are the 2 kinds of bones?
A
- Dense/compact bone
2. Spongy bone
3
Q
What are the 2 bone ossification processes?
A
- Intramembranous ossification
2. Endochondrial ossification
4
Q
What is the Intramembranous ossification?
A
- starts in the fibrous membrane
- forms flat bones
5
Q
What are the 5 hormones in bones?
A
- Parathyroid hormone - increases osteoclasts and osteoblasts activity
- Calcitonin - important in children and pregnant, inhibits osteoclasts
- Thyroxin - bone growth and metabolism
- Human growth hormone - bone growth
- Sex hormones - stimulates osteoblasts
6
Q
What are the types of bones?
A
- long
- short (ex carpols)
- flat (smooth)
- irregular (things stick out)
- sesmoid (grows inside tendon)
- sutural ( where sutures come together)
