What did the Townsend Acts do?
The Townsend Acts placed taxes on tea, glass, paper, lead, and paint - goods that the colonies were only allowed to buy from Britain. Britain used the money to pay salaries of colonial judges and governors.
How did the Townshend Acts affect the government of the colonies?
The acts ordered that governors and judges would be paid by Britain instead of being paid by the colonial assemblies. This gave Britain greater control over the day-to-day running of the colonies.

Low-paid soldiers took on second jobs off-duty, taking jobs from Bostonians’ and creating tense relations. When a boy yelled insults at a soldier standing guard, the soldier hit him. The resentful crowd turned violent, and the soldiers fired at them.
