Chapter 5 (RTI) Flashcards
1
Q
Purposes of RTI
A
- Provide intervention as soon as the need arises
- Lessen the number of referrals to SPED services
2
Q
Core Principles of RTI
A
- Use all available resources to teach all students
- Use scientific, research-based interventions/ instruction
- Monitor classroom performance
- Conduct universal screening/benchmarking
- Use a multitier model of service delivery
- Make data-based decisions
- Monitor progress frequently
3
Q
The 4 major issues of the Ability-Achievement Discrepancy Model
A
- Fail to differentiate between children who have LD and those who have academic achievement problems related to poor instruction, lack of experience, etc.
- Discriminate against mainstream culture and students who are in upper and lower ranges of IQ
- Do not effectively predict which students will benefit from or respond differentially to instruction
- Requires children to fail for a substantial period of time (years) before they are far enough behind to exhibit a discrepancy
4
Q
The Role RTI Should Play in Diagnosis of LD
A
- School districts should keep in mind a number of provisions of IDEIA
- When using RTI, identifying an LD becomes focused on the documentation of the student’s instructional needs instead of their disability
5
Q
Tier 1
A
- Universal screenings of literacy skills, academics, and behavior
- Teachers implement a variety of research-supported teaching strategies and approaches
- Ongoing curriculum-based assessment and continuous progress monitoring are used to guide high-quality instruction
- Students receive differentiated instruction based on data from ongoing assessments
6
Q
Tier 2
A
- Gen ed teachers receive support
- Curriculum-based measures are used to identify which students continue to need assistance and with what specific kinds of skills
- Collaborative problem solving is used to design and implement instructional support for students (might be standard/might be individualized)
- Identified students receive more intensive scientific, research-based instruction targeted to their individual needs
- Student progress is more frequently monitored
- Systematic assessment is conducted
- Parents are informed and included
7
Q
Tier 3
A
- Parents are informed and included
- Evaluation uses multiple sources of assessment data
- Intensive, systematic, specialized instruction is provided
