Ch 2 (Methods of Assessment and Testing Considerations) Flashcards
Definitions of and differences between formal and informal assessments
- Formal assessments have a single set of expectations for all students. They include exams, diagnostic tests, achievement tests, screening/intelligence tests, etc.
- Informal assessments evaluate student’s performance without using standardized tests. Examples are classroom projects, experiments, and presentations.
Norm referenced tests defined and the purpose
Defined:
-It is a test used to compare students to others in their age group
Purpose:
-Allow us to compare a student’s skills to others in their age group
Drawbacks of Norm-Referenced Tests
-The more unlike the child the norm group is, the less valuable the results of testing will generally be
Definition of Criterion-Referenced Tests
-Report how well students are doing relative to predetermined performance level on a specified set of educational goals or outcomes included in the school, district, or state curriculum
Definition of Standards Referenced Tests
-Describe what students should know and be able to do in different subjects at various grade levels
Definition of Ecological Assessments
-Involves directly observing and assessing a child in the many environments in which he or she routinely operates
Definition of Curriculum-Based Assessment (CBA)
-Assessment based on the curriculum that a child is mastering
Definition of Curriculum-based Measurement (CBM)
-An assessment method that involves timing tasks and then charting performance
Similarities and differences of CBA and CBM
-They are both assessment methods, but CBM is about noting the performance of a child and CBA is about what curriculum the child is mastering
Definition of Portfolio Assessments
-Collection of work gathered over a period of time to reflect what you have been taught and what you have learned
Definition of Authentic Assessments
-Form of assessment in which students are asked to perform real-world tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills
Definition of Task Analysis
-Involves breaking down a particular task into the basic sequential steps, component parts, or skills necessary to accomplish the task
Definition of Outcome Based Assessments
-Have been developed to respond to concerns that education, to be meaningful, must be directly related to what educators and parents want the child to have gained in the end
