Chapter 5 - Quality of Measurement Flashcards
Validity
Meaningful
Relevance
Data is directly relevant to what is being measured and the reason it is being measured
Accuracy
True Value
observed value matches the true value
Reliability
Consistent Measure
When the value remains consistent over repeated measure
Measurement Bias
error in measurement likely in one direction
Trustworthy Data
Measurement must be both valid and accurate
Threats to measurement
- Measurement is indirect, measured in a different way
- Measuring the wrong thing or dimension of bx
- Measurement artifacts
Measurement artifacts
Data gives misleading picture due to how it was measured
a. discontinuous measurement
b. poorly scheduled measurement periods
Threats to Measurement Accuracy and Reliability
Human Error (biggest error)
a. poorly designed measurement system
b. inadequate training
c. unintended influence on observers
Observer Drift
observers alter, unknowingly the way they are measuring
Observer Reactivity
a. measurement error from an observer’s awareness of others evaluating data
b. a participant’s awareness of their bx being observed
