Chapter 5 - Physics Flashcards
What does a mains circuit have?
It has a live wire, which is alternatively positive and negative every cycle and a neutral wire at zero volts.
What is the peak potential difference of an a.c. supply?
It is the maximum voltage measured from zero volts
How do you measure the frequency of an a.c. supply?
You’d have to measure the time period of the waves then use the equation.
What is socket and plug cases made of?
They are made of stiff plastic materials that enclose the electrical connections.
What is a mains cable made up of?
It’s made up of two or three insulated copper wires surrounded by an outer layer of flexible plastic material
What is the colour in a three-pin plug?
The live wire is brown, the neutral wire is blue and the earth wire is striped green and yellow.
Where is the earth wire connected?
It’s connected to the longest pin in a plug and is used to earth the metal case of a mains appliance
What is the power supplied to a device?
It is the energy transferred to it each second
What happens when the charge flows through a resistor?
The energy transferred to the resistor makes it hot.
What happens when charge flows around a circuit for a given time?
The energy supplied by the battery is equal to the energy transferred to all the components in the circuit.
What does domestic electricity meter measure?
It measures how much energy is supplied
