Chapter 2 - Physics Flashcards
What are metals the best of?
They are the best conductors of energy
What are non-metal materials like wool and fibreglass the best of?
They are the best insulators
What happens as the higher the thermal conductivity of a material goes?
The higher the rate of energy transfer through it
What happens as the thicker a layer of insulating material goes?
The lower the rate of energy transfer through it
What is the specific heat capacity of a substance?
The energy needed to change the temperature of 1kg of the substance by 1 degree
What happens as the greater the mass of an object gets?
The more slowly it’s temperature increases when it is heated
What is thing we use to heat houses?
Electric and/or gas heaters and gas or oil-filed central heating or solid-fuels stoves.
What can you use to reduce the rate of energy transfer from houses?
Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, double-glazed windows, aluminium foil behind radiators.
What is cavity wall insulation?
It is insulation material that is used to fill the cavity between the two brick layers of an external house wall.
