Chapter 3 - Physics Flashcards
What are our energy demands met by?
They are met with mostly by burning oil, coal and gas
What do nuclear power, biofuels and renewable resources provide?
They provide energy to generate some of the energy you can use.
What are Uranium and Plutonium used as?
They are used as the fuel in a nuclear power station.
What can biofuels such as methane and ethanol be used as?
They can be used to generate energy.
What is a wind turbine?
It is an electricity generator on top of a tall tower.
How do waves generate energy?
They generate energy by turning a floating generator.
How are hydroelectricity generators turned?
They are turned by water running downhill.
What are solar cells?
Solar cells are flat solid cells and use sun’s energy to generate electricity directly.
What do solar heating panels use the sun’s energy to do?
To heat water directly
Where does geothermal energy come from?
It comes from the energy transferred by radioactive substances deep inside the earth.
What does water pumped into hot rocks produce?
It produces steam to drive turbines at the Earth’s surface that generate electricity.
What do fossil fuels produce?
They produce increased levels of greenhouse gases, which could cause global warming
What do nuclear fuels produce?
They produce radioactive waste.
How can different energy resources be evaluated?
They can be evaluated in terms of reliability, environmental effects, pollution and waste.
