What is an inflection?
When a word changes its form (function in sentence, meaning).
What is case?
Words perform different functions in a sentence. These different functions are called “cases.”
What are the three cases in English?
- Subjective: the word is the subject of the sentence.
- Objective: the word shows possession.
- Possessive: the word is a direct object. Whatever the verb does, it does it TO the direct object.
What is ‘number’?
Words can be either singular or plural.
What is ‘gender’?
Some words, mostly pronouns, change their form depending upon whether they are referring to a masculine, feminine, or neuter object.
What is a declension?
A declension is a pattern of inflection (there are different ways to form a plural, man = men, book = books).
What is a noun?
A noun is a word that stands for someone or something.
What is an adjective?
An adjective is a word that modifies a noun (or another adjective).
What is a preposition/object of the preposition/prepositional phrase?
A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between two items. The word or phrase following the preposition is the object of the preposition. The preposition, its object, and any modifiers, is a prepositional phrase.
What is the subject and the predicate?
The term subject describes the subject of the verb and what modifies the subject. Predicate describes the rest of the sentence, including the verb, direct object, etc.
What is the definite article?
The definite article is the word “the.” Identifying something in particular.
What is an indefinite article?
The indefinite article is the word “a.” The article is indefinite because it does not identify any one particular student.
What does the ending of a greek verb indicate?
Person and number.
What are first person, second person, and third person in English.
- First person = I/we
- Second person = you/you plural
- Third person = he/she/it and all nouns.
