Chapter 20 - Notes Flashcards
What are Pattern 1 roots?
Pattern 1 roots are not altered in the formation of their present tense stem, which means the present and future tense stems are identical.
What are Pattern 2 roots?
Some verbs use more than one root in the formation of their different tense stems.
What are Pattern 3 roots?
Liquid verbs for the most part are formed regularly. However, they use a slightly different tense formative, and the present and future tense stems are often slightly different.
What are the liquid verb consonants?
λ, μ, ν, and ρ
True or False: Instead of adding a σ as the tense formative, a liquid future adds εσ before the connecting vowel.
True: However, this σ will not stay because it is between two vowels, or what is called “intervocalic.” It therefore drops out and the ε and connecting vowel contract.
True or False: A liquid future always has a circumflex over the contracted vowels (e.g., μενοῦμεν) except in the first person plural middle (μενούμεθα).
True
What are Pattern 4 roots?
Pattern 4 roots are modified in regular ways in the formation of their present tense stem.
1. Root in a stop
2. Double consonants
3. Letters added
What is a compound verb?
A compound verb is a verb that is made up of two parts, a preposition and a verb. Compound verbs form their tense stems the same way as the simple verb.
