Chapter 5 - Integumentary System (continued) Flashcards
Functions of the Integumentary System:
- Protection
- Regulation of body temp
- Cutaneous sensation
- Synthesis of Vitamin D
- Blood reservoir
- Excretion of water
Protection (Function of Integumentary system)
keratin, melanin, langerhans cells
Regulation of body temp (Function of Integumentary system)
- Sweating - Eccrine sweat glands;
- Thru blood vessels - when body is too cold, blood vessels in dermis constrict (narrow)–less heat loss–less blood flow to surface–protects critical functions–inner parts of body must be kept warm enough so less blood flow to skin means less heat loss;
when body is too hot, blood vessels in dermis dilate (widen) bringing more blood to skin to release heat
Cutaneous sensation (Function of Integumentary system)
merkel cell, meissner’s corpuscle, hair root plexus, free nerve ending, pacinian corpuscle
Synthesis of Vitamin D (Function of Integumentary system)
1st step in synthesis; comes from diet & also made by skin; sun converts “cholesterol” molecule to vitamin D; calcium cannot be absorbed without vitamin D
Blood reservoir (Function of Integumentary system)
storage place
Excretion of Water (Function of Integumentary system)
removal of waste products & water thru sweat
