Chapter 5- Immunity and Host Defense Flashcards
The ability of body to resist disease
Immunity
two types of Immunity response
Innate and Adaptive
Innate Resistance vs Adaptive Resistance
Innate- non specific
Adaptive- acquired and specific
An immune response that protects human from infectious diseases. It exist at birth and always present. No memory.
Innate Response
Explain natural host resistance in Innate Response
the susceptibility of pathogens varies from species to species. Eg. anthrax: fatal blood infection vs cutaneous in humans
Explain infection site and tissue specificity
Pathogens prefer a specific body site to initiate infection. Eg: C. tetani ingested vs. deep wounds
Physical and Chemical Barriers in Innate resistance include:
Skin
mucous membranes
(lysozymes and defensins)
