Chapter 5: Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
Catalysts
A
Substance that speeds up chemical reaction, and does not get changed along the way
Reduces the need to increase temperature to speed up processes.
2
Q
Enzymes
A
Protein that functions as a biological catalyst
Speeds up metabolic reactions
Denature (active site deforms) at high temps, or low/high pH
Works best at optimum temp
3
Q
Enzymes for each substance
A
Starch: Amylase Maltose: Maltase Sucrose: Sucrase Protein: Protease Lipid: Lipase
Each enzyme has specific shape catered to shape of substance
4
Q
Mode of enzyme
A
'lock and key' enzyme: lock substrate: key substrate binds to active to form enzyme-substrate converts a product product is released from active site
5
Q
Factors affecting enzymes rate of reaction
A
Temperature:
Low temp: inactive
Temperatures increasing up until optimum temp: increase rate
Increases more than optimum: Denatures and rate decreases.
pH:
Optimum pH, any other denatures enzyme
