Autonomy vs shame and doubt

- children learn to do things on their own
- if held back, they learn to doubt their abilities and feel shame
Initiative by guilt
3 - 5 years
- children learn to assume more responsibility by taking initiative
- if not, feel guilty by overstepping limits set by parents/caregivers
Industry vs inferiority
5 yrs - puberty
- children learn to be competent by mastering new intellectual, social, and physical skills
- or feel inferior if they fail to develop these skills
- need to feel like they’re good at something (art, math, etc)
Identity vs inferiority
Adolescence
- develop a sense of identity by experimenting
- if no role experimentation, may lead to role confusion (not having an identity)
- as old as college*
Intimacy vs isolation
Young adulthood
- form intimate relationships with others
- if not, become isolated of fail three to do so
Generality vs stagnation
Middle adulthood
- feel they are giving back to next generation
- if not, feel stagnant from not helping
- stagnant often referred to as the “midlife crisis”
