- Current version of the APA’s diagnostic and classification guidelines for mental disorders

biopschosocial approach
- abnormality is from interactions that are biological, psychological (behavior and cognitive), and sociocultural factors
What is abnormal?
- Deviant: most people aren’t doing that behavior (culture’s expectations)
- Distress: causing stress to others/themself
- Dysfunctional: not functioning
vulnerability-stress model
- biophysical explaination of schizophrenia
- says genetic, prenatal, and postnatal biological factors lead someone to be vulnerable to schizophrenia
- however, environmental stress determines whether it develops or not
psychotic disorder
- a disorder characterized by a loss of contract with reality
- unusual experiences or behaviors
hallucinations
- physiological
- auditory, visual, tactile
delusions
- distorted beliefs
- grandeur (they are G-d)
- persecution (others are out to get them)
schizophrenia
- psychoic disorder
- “split from reality”
specific phobia
such as to snakes, bugs, etc
social phobia
reading aloud in class, etc
agoraphobia
fear of spaces
anhedonia
can’d find pleasure in things
panic disorder
- an anxiety disorder
- not necessarily triggered by anything
- Treatment: face fear head on, mimicking symptoms of the panic disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
- worrying about everything
- has excessive anxiety for at least 6 months
- Treatment: thought-stopping
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- fear of something
- knows their fear is illogical/irrational
- causes significant disruption/distress in the person’s daily life
major depressive disorder
- a mood disorder
- depressive symptoms last more than 2 weeks
- Adults: must have depressed mood or Anhedonia
- plus 4 other symptoms:
1 - irritability
2 - fatigue (sleeping more/less)
3 - changes in weight/eating patterns
4 - feelings of worthlessness
major depressive episode
- episode characterized by symptoms ( feelings of intense hopelessness, extreme fatigue, etc)
bipolar disorder
- cycles between depressive and manic episodes
- phases usually last 2-3 months
manic episode
experienced by someone with bipolar disorder
- elevated self esteem
- hyper productivity
- recklessness
- elevated mood
- sometimes: delusions and hallucinations
positive symptoms of schizophrenia (added)
- hallucinations
- delusions
negative symptoms of schizophrenia (missing)
- apathy (they don’t care)
- anhedonia
- flat affect
disorganized symptoms of schizophrenia
- rambling, tangental speech
- psychomotor agitation (rocking back and forth) or catatonia (won’t move)
- inappropriate affect
