Chapter 5 - Covalent Network Substances Flashcards
Are Covalent Network Substances good conductors of electricity?
Nope, because their electrons are localized.
What is a Covalent Network Substance❓
A covalent network substance is an infinite structure, in which every atom is bonded together with every other surrounding atom by strong covalent bonds.
Why are Covalent Network Substances solids extremely hard and brittle?
They have very strong bonds and a rigid lattice.
Why do covalent network substances have very high melting and boiling points?
They have very strong bonds.
Chemically inert?
They have localized electrons therefore it is hard to move/react.
Why are Covalent Network Substances insoluble in water?
They have no charged particles and very strong bonds.
Why do Graphite conduct electricity?
Graphite is SOFT and a good conductor of electricity because it’s 4th electron is delocalised and free to move in between the layers of carbon atoms and are able to conduct electricity.
Different particle size❓
Filtration
Different solubilities in a selected liquid
Crystallization
Purification of liquids
Distillation❄️ most effective for components in a mixture which have very different boiling points.
