Chapter 11 - Reaction Rates Flashcards
Collision Theory
The collision must occur with Sufficient Energy to break the bonds of the reactants and with the Correct Orientation for breaking and forming bonds.
Collision Theory
Collision must occur.
Collision Theory
It is the minimum energy required for a collision to result in a reaction.
Collision Theory
It is the highest energy state for the reaction. It represents the points at which bonds are broken and formed.
Collision Theory
Change of Enthalpy during a chemical reaction.
Collision Theory
Endothermic Reaction +
The Rate of a Chemical Reaction can be determined by?
(i) the rate of disappearance of reactions
(ii) the rate of appearance of reactions
Factors Which affect Reaction Rates⏰
The Nature of the Reactants
If there is no complex bond breaking and forming then a reaction will proceed rapidly.
Eg. Precipitation
If there is bond breaking then the reaction will proceed gradually at room temperature.
Eg. Oxidation Reactions
Factors Which affect Reaction Rates⏰
Concentration of Reactions
The rate of reaction can be increased by increasing the concentration Of one or both reactants. This causes the number of collisions between particles to increase and therefor the rate of reaction to increase.
Factors Which affect Reaction Rates⏰
Stare of Sub-Division of Reactants
The smaller the size of the volume of reactants, the faster the reaction rate.
Increase Surface Area = Decrease Reaction Rate
Factors Which affect Reaction Rates⏰
Temperature ☀️❄️
Increase temperature = increase reaction rate because more energy have sufficient energy to overcome the activation energy barrier.
Factors Which affect Reaction Rates⏰
Catalysts
Are substances which increase the reaction rats without being permanently used up. They provide an alternative reaction pathway, which had a lower activation energy therefore more molecules will have enough energy to overcome the activation energy barrier.
Bond breaking requires energy and
Bond forming releases energy.
