Q

Why are Metals Malleable and Ductile?

A

The delocalised electrons in metals do not “belong” to any particular positive ion in the lattice so metallic bonding is said to be “non-directional”. Therefore, if sufficient force is applied to the metal, one layer of positive ions can slip or slide over another without affecting the metal bonding. This means that the attractive forces are still present in between the newly deformed metal.

Q

Why are metals hard, tough and dense with high tensile strength

A

Very strong Electrostatic Bond holds it tightly together therefore they are very strong
