Q

Language extinction currently throughout history has been a major concern for cultural geographers, linguist, anthropologist and other academics: explain two consequences of language extinction

A

Loss of cultural diversity results in sameness/ homogeneity of global culture

Some academic people believe that fewer languages might mean fewer conflicts among different groups of people, which brings enhancement of communication across ethnic and national boundaries

Q

Predominant church affiliation by county, 2000: identify and explain two factors that have influenced the distribution on map: Southern Baptist

A

They are the indigenous religion of the south east United States ( most tend to be uneducated ) and they did not require formal theological degree to start a church

It appeals to African Americans who didn’t have access to other religion also not until recently there was not a lot of migration to the south east to dilute beliefs because not big cities with jobs

Q

Predominant church affiliation by county, 2000: explain how the map as presented at this scale is an incomplete representation of the geography of religion in the US

A

You cannot compare the % of those religions marked one the map with one of a different county

You can’t tell variations between counties, which has more that county or that one?

There is no way of knowing how concentrated the beliefs of the people that follow the religion in the county

Q

Language extinction currently throughout history has been a major concern for cultural geographers, linguist, anthropologist and other academics: Explain three causes of language extinction

A

1) colonizers/conquers forbid the vanquished groups to speak or use their native languages & are forced to use the language of colonizers/conquers.
2) some groups of people get virtually wiped out by conquers and their language dies with the people
3) some groups of people get virtually wiped out by natural disasters like tsunamis hurricanes or earthquakes and the language disappears with the people
