Chapter 1-3 Op Flashcards
Identify and briefly explain one factor other than demographic transition that was reasonable for Europes development as a source migrant to the us between 1800 and 1920
A environmental factor was the Irish potato famine, potatoes were the staple crop and they had a potato blight, so they began to starve, so they needed to go somewhere else like us to fin food and sustenance.
Briefly explain how two aspect of the demographic transition model account Europe transformation into a destination region for migrants from North Africa between 1960 to 2000
Europe is in stage 4, population is aging (stagnant) declining ( mainly the general labor force declining, creating jobs people don’t want to do)
Africa is in stage 2 their is to much population because of high birth rate hence competition, so they moved to less a populated
What is a demographic transition model
It explains the process of change in the fertility, mortality, and natural increase rates in a country
Identify a specific country that could reasonably correspond to stage 2 and explain the population process at work in that country
Afghanistan is in stage 2: birth rate has not dropped and death rate dropped. Women are not educated, and not in the workforce. There are no uses of contraception. The expansion of the medical Revolution gave people medical treatment. They aren’t in industrial revolution yet.
Identify a specific country that could reasonably correspond to stage 4 and explain the population process at work in that country
Japan is in stage 4: the CDr and cbr drop and there is zero population growth; women are educated, there is abundant availability of contraception (meaning people can get it more), women are working an they put away having babies
Identify a specific country that could reasonably correspond to stage 3 and explain the population process at work in that country
India is in stage 3: natural increase begins to moderate, low birth rate, low death rate; women are beginning to be educated (less babies are made), contraceptions are available, and medical revolution expanded (people get medical treatment)
Describe a specific population policy that the country represented by stage 2 that might develop in response to the conditions in that country
They want to lower the birth rate: so they impose policy like Chinese one child policy; they can make contraceptions more available
Describe a specific population policy that the country represented by stage 4 that might develop in response to the conditions in that country
No growth in population: they should increase birth rate by promoting having babies by giving them incentives, bring people from other countries to work to expand workforce relative to old people by imposing a guest work program like Germany
Describe a specific population policy that the country represented by stage 3 that might develop in response to the conditions in that country
Birth rate declining so they need to bring up promote giving incentives to them to have kids
Peaks in immigration to the United States reflects changing circumstances at the global scale
Refer to graph:
Identify the main source areas and explain two key push factor associated with the early 20th century peaks
Southern and Eastern Europe
Economic push- spread of industrial revolution; exploding population hence competition for jobs.
Blushivik revolution caused death and upheaval
Ww1- death and destruction on Europe and people want to escape to a safe place
Peaks in immigration to the United States reflects changing circumstances at the global scale
Refer to graph:
Identify the main source areas and explain two keys push factors associated with the late 20th century peak
Asian and Latin American
Vietnam war- people left because of violence and death and the control over the communist (they feared them)
Mexico lack of economy opportunity, need to find jobs; because no jobs
Identify and explain two reasons why some geographers today believe Malthus theory can be used to predict future population issues
World population has increased by a crazy amount more countries move into stage 2&3 and death rates decrease.
Limited use of contraceptions (against religion, not available, etc)
Some parts of the world people do not adopt agricultural technology a cannot produce good yields hence food production not enough to feed countries (Africa)
Identify and explain two reasons why some geographers today believe Malthus theory cannot be used to predict future population issues
We produce more food than he predicted b/c of factory farming, bringing more places under agricultural cultivation, and the creation of gmo foods (genetically enhanced foods)
Population has been slower than predicted: contraception is more widely available then it used to be, women are now educated and work so they put of having babies (stages 345 have declining birth rates)
Explain the demographic characteristics of each country above with respect to the demographic transition model
Country A
Country a is in stage 2: it has high birth rate, little old population, falling death rate and it is probably a developing country
Explain the demographic characteristics of each country above with respect to the demographic transition model
County B
Country b is in stage 4: it has low birth rate, low death rate, zero natural increase and it is a developed country
