Chapter 5-5 Flashcards
What is the process by which most nutrients are absorbed in our body?
diffusion
What is the process by which water components in our nutrition are moved through our body?
osmosis
Define osmosis
movement of a solvent across a semipermeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to high solute concentration
what is the goal of osmosis?
to make the solute the same on either side of the membrane
define tonicity
the relationship between the solute concentration inside the cell to outside the cell
define hemolysis
when too much water is taken into a cell and it bursts
define a hypotonic solution as it relates to red blood cells
a solution where the solutes in the water are lower than the solutes in the cell
define an isotonic solution
when the solute of the concentration of the cell is the same inside and outside
define a hypertonic solution
the solute outside the red blood cell is higher than inside
what is crenation
the cell shrinks because water moves outside the cell to the solution outside of it because the solute concentration outside the cell is lower than inside.
