17
Q

How are 3 ways acid precipitation negatively impacts the earth?

A

1) when acid precipitation goes into our fresh water, the pH rises and may cause harm to sea animals.
2) causes harm to crops grown in farms
3) chemically reacts with limestone in buildings and monuments which causes damage

18
Q

Why does francium react more vigorously with water/acids than lithium?

A

because it has many many valence shells so there is less gravitational pull towards the nucleus, meaning the electrons are ready to react

19
Q

What is usually released when metals react with acids?

A

they release hydrogen gas

20
Q

What are 2 components of acid precipitation?

A

Nitric and Sulphuric acid

21
Q

What does sulphuric acid reacting with calcium carbonate create?

A

sulphuric acid + calcium carbonate = calcium sulphate + water + carbon dioxide

22
Q

How can you identify an organic compound?

A

if the compound contains carbon

23
Q

What compounds contain carbon, but are not an organic compound?

A

carbonates (CaCO3) carbides (SiC)
cyanides (CN)
and oxides (CO2)

24
Q

What does nitric acid reacting with calcium carbonate create?

A

nitric acid + calcium carbonate = calcium nitrate + water + carbon dioxide

25
Q

How do you identify an inorganic compound?

A

if it doesn’t contain carbon (with the few exceptions)

26
Q

How do you identify a hydrocarbon?

A

an organic compound that contains only carbon and hydrogen

27
Q

How do you identify an alcohol?

A

an organic compound that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen

28
Q

What is a solvent?

A

a liquid that dissolves other substances

29
Q

What are the 6 types of chemical reactions? [SDSDNC]

A

1) synthesis
2) decomposition
3) single-replacement
4) double-replacement
5) neutralization
6) combustion

30
Q

What is a synthesis reaction?

A

when 2 elements combine to produce one compound

31
Q

what is a decomposition reaction?

A

when a compound breaks down into two elements

32
Q

what is a single replacement?

A

when an element and compound reacts to produce another element and compound

33
Q

what is double replacement?

A

when 2 ionic compounds react to produce 2 other ionic compounds

34
Q

in double replacement, what does one compound form?

A

a precipitate

35
Q

what is a neutralization reaction?

A

when an acid and base react to produce a salt and water

36
Q

what is a combustion reaction?

A

when a hydrocarbon and oxygen react to produce carbon dioxide and water

37
Q

Define “reaction rate”.

A

how quick/slow reactants turn to products

38
Q

What are 4 main factors that affect the rate of chemical reactions?

A

1) Temperature
2) Surface Area
3) Concentration
4) Presence of a catalyst

39
Q

How does increasing temperature cause a faster rate?

A

heat causes the particles of the reactants to move more quickly resulting in more collisions and energy

40
Q

How does concentration increase the reaction rate?

A

when you increase the concentration of the reactants, it increases the rate.

ex. blowing into a campfire

41
Q

How does surface area increase the reaction rate?

A

there is more SA between the reactants which increases the reaction rate

42
Q

What is a catalyst?

A

a substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction without being used in the reaction.

43
Q

What enzyme does saliva contain? What does it do?

A

amylase, breaks down starch molecules
