Chapter 5 Flashcards
Define a base.
chemical compound that produces a solution with a pH of more than 7 when dissolved in water.
How do you name a 2 element acid with an “-ide” ending?
“-ide” ending changes to “-ic” ending and name begins with “hydro”.
ex. HCl = hydrochlorIC acid
How do you name a 3 element acid with an “-ate” ending?
“-ate” becomes “-ic” and you drop the hydrogen.
ex. H2SO4 = sulfuric acid
How do you name a 3 element acid with an “-ite” ending?
“-ite” become “-ous” and drop the hydrogen.
ex. HNO2 = nitrous acid
Why cant hydrogen and hydroxide be high in concentration at the same time?
Because hydrogen and hydroxide react with each other and create water.
what does aqueous (aq) mean?
dissolved in water to make a solution
What is the difference between HCl and HCl(aq)?
HCl is named as hydrogen chloride.
HCl(aq) is named as hydrochloric acid.
Why can acid/base solutions create electricity?
Because it contains freely moving ions.
What are 6 properties of acids?
1) Tastes sour
2) Burns skin
3) Corrodes metals
4) Conducts electricity
5) pH less than 7
6) Produces hydrogen ions when dissolved in solution
What are 6 properties of bases?
1) Tastes bitter
2) Burns skin & is slippery
3) Doesn’t react with metals
4) Conducts electricity
5) pH more than 7
6) Forms hydroxide ions when dissolved in solution
Define an acid.
a chemical compound that produces a solution with a pH of less than 7 when dissolved in water.
What is a salt made up of?
a metal and non-metal
What is a metal oxide?
it is a chemical compound containing a metal and an oxygen
ex. Na2O
What does a metal oxide and water create?
a base
What is a non-metal oxide?
a chemical compund containing a non-metal and an oxygen.
ex. ClO
What does a non-metal and rainwater create?
acid precipitation
How are 3 ways acid precipitation negatively impacts the earth?
1) when acid precipitation goes into our fresh water, the pH rises and may cause harm to sea animals.
2) causes harm to crops grown in farms
3) chemically reacts with limestone in buildings and monuments which causes damage
Why does francium react more vigorously with water/acids than lithium?
because it has many many valence shells so there is less gravitational pull towards the nucleus, meaning the electrons are ready to react
What is usually released when metals react with acids?
they release hydrogen gas
What are 2 components of acid precipitation?
Nitric and Sulphuric acid
What does sulphuric acid reacting with calcium carbonate create?
sulphuric acid + calcium carbonate = calcium sulphate + water + carbon dioxide
How can you identify an organic compound?
if the compound contains carbon
What compounds contain carbon, but are not an organic compound?
carbonates (CaCO3) carbides (SiC)
cyanides (CN)
and oxides (CO2)
What does nitric acid reacting with calcium carbonate create?
nitric acid + calcium carbonate = calcium nitrate + water + carbon dioxide
