Chapter 5 Flashcards
Appendicular skeleton
Bones of the limbs and limb girdles that are attached to the axial skeleton
Amphiarthrosis
A slightly moveable joint
Articular cartilage
The cartilage covering the articular surfaces of the bones forming a synovial joint
Articulations
Joint; part where two bones meet
Axial skeleton
Bones of the skull, vertebrae column, thorax, and sternum
Bony thorax
Bones of the thorax, including ribs, sternum, and thoracic vertebrae
Cartilaginous joint
A joint in which the opposing bony surfaces are covered with a layer of hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage and in which some degree of free movement is possible
Compact bone
The compact noncancellous portion of bone that consists largely of concentric lamellar osteons and interstitial lamellae
Diaphysis
The shaft of a long bone
Pelvic girdle
Incomplete bony basin formed by the two coxal bones that secures the lower limbs to the sacrum of the axial skeleton
Periosteum
Double layered connective tissue that covers and nourishes the bone
Red marrow
found mainly in the flat bones such as hip bone, breast bone, skull, ribs, vertebrae and shoulder blades, and in the cancellous (“spongy”) material at the proximal ends of the long bones femur and humerus
Short bones
Are cubed and as long as they are wide
Shoulder girdle
Composite of two bones, scapula and clavicle, that attach the upper limb to the axial skeleton; pectoral girdle
Skull
Bony enclosure for the brain
