Ch. 7 Nervous System Flashcards
Axon
usually long process of a nerve fiber that generally conducts impulses away from the body of the nerve cell.
Afferent neuron
cell that is specialized to conduct nerve impulses
Central nervous system
The portion of the vertebrate nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord
Cerebral hemisphere
Either of the two symmetrical halves of the cerebrum, as divided by the longitudinal cerebral fissure.
Dendrites
Treelike processes of neurons, which receive impulses from other neurons and send them to the neuron’s cell body
Efferent neurons
neuron conducting impulses outwards from the brain or spinal cord
Gray matter
Brownish-gray nerve tissue, especially of the brain and spinal cord, composed of nerve cell bodies and their dendrites and some supportive tissue.
Meninges
membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord
Nerve
Any of the cordlike bundles of fibers made up of neurons through which sensory stimuli and motor impulses pass between the brain or other parts of the central nervous system and the eyes, glands, muscles, and other parts of the body
Neurons
Any of the impulse-conducting cells that constitute the brain, spinal column, and nerves in vertebrates, consisting of a nucleated cell body with one or more dendrites and a single axon
Peripheral nervous system
The part of the vertebrate nervous system constituting the nerves outside the central nervous system and including the cranial nerves, spinal nerves, and sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
Polarization
The partial or complete polar separation of the positive and negative electric charges in a nuclear, atomic, molecular, or chemical system
Reflex
an involuntary action or response
